What is Invasion Science?

It is US policy to prevent the introduction, establishment, and spread of invasive species, as well as to eradicate and control populations of invasive species that are already established. Yet a few notable successes notwithstanding, it is difficult to argue that we are winning the battle. To address this challenge, in 2023 the University of Florida launched the Invasion Science Research Institute (ISRI), with the goal of transforming understanding and management of invasive species. The institute aims to synergize the significant research activities that exist across UF and its many partners by providing a ‘horizontal’ structure that traverses the traditional ‘vertical’, disciplinary-based silos.

Invasion science delves deeper than merely addressing individual invasive species. This initiative is focused on the bigger picture, working across disciplines to share knowledge and experience from diverse systems and sectors, to enable adaptative strategies to alleviate constraints and develop timely and effective solutions.

It is generally accepted that preventing invasive species from being introduced and spreading in a new environment is the most cost-effective strategy for invasive species management. However, the accelerating rate of arrival of invasive species represents a considerable challenge to preventive biosecurity measures alone. In this context, the ability to detect species early and mount rapid responses to reduce spread and impact is paramount. We need to bolster the science base to pioneer novel, proactive approaches to deal with new invasive species before they become costly to manage and diminish the impact of existing invasive species that have so far eluded effective control. This approach requires not only technological innovation but also innovation in translation and adoption via increased communication, community engagement, public-private partnerships, and capacity building.
